BGD Workshop on the Impacts of Blue-Green Solutions on and Interactions with Spatial Planning

Category : Events , News

A workshop is planned to take place on the 9th of October in Berlin after the BGD Annual Meeting on “the Impacts of Blue-Green Solutions on and interactions with, spatial planning: Adaptation for climate change in new developments and retrofitting

The purpose of the workshop is to build a network between the BGD PhD students, and to coordinate the kick-start the new BGD research related to interactions of modelling and planning.  The topic is selected to be narrow enough so that a one day event could meet two objectives:

    1. To present in detail on aspects (topics) related to the BGD project in which several PhD students are doing their PhD theses; and
    2. Detailed discussion on how to “sharpen” their research so that it has best benefit to the BGD project in interactions with leading European designers/spatial planners.

The above goals will be achieved by interactions between:

    • Leading spatial planners/designers from Europe who will present the philosophy used in their Blue-Green related successful projects.
    • BGD work package leaders & academic partners who will provide links between planners and the project, to facilitate the refinement of PhD research.
    • BGD PhD students who will bring posters summarising their projects to facilitate discussion. (Poster requirements will be issued separately and must be submitted in advance of the workshop).

Anna Solcerova joins TU Delft as a new BGD PhD student

Category : News

Anna Solcerova

At TU Delft there is a new PhD student focusing on the role of water in the cooling effect of blue-green climate adaptation facilities in the urban environment. Her name is Anna Solcerova and she comes from Czech Republic. She has MSc degree in Meteorology, which she studied at Wageningen University (Netherlands) and another one from Environmental modelling from the Czech University of Life Sciences (Czech Republic). She has already focused on the effects of water bodies on urban heat islands in her master thesis and is very interested in taking a deeper look into this topic.

The objective of the PhD study is to investigate the relationship between water retention capacity, water availability, soil moisture, vegetation type, evaporation and the thermal effects of these hydrological processes in green roofs, vegetated swales and nature-friendly embankments for urban canals, ponds and lakes, to quantify the effect of these blue-green facilities on ambient air temperature, water availability and water demand during droughts.

The BGD is supported by Climate KIC (EIT)
